Ok here are the parts needed to rebuild your cart wheel hubs. The seal in a new neoprene seal with a built in O ring that will keep every thing out and allow some grease out.
All parts are from McMaster-Carr.
SEALS……..9505K92 O ring supported U-cup seal, square profile, 1/4" WD X1/4'' HT,1-1/2'' ID, 2' OD X2 each
yes these work still useing the felt steel retaining ring.
INNER BUSHING…..6391K283 OIL-EMBEDDED SLEEVE BEARING, FOR 1'' SHAFT DIAMETER, 1 1/4'' OD, 1'' LG X2 each
OUTER BUSHING……6391K263 OIL-EMBEDDED SLEEVE BEARING, FOR 3/4'' SHAFT DIAMETER, 1'' OD, 3/4'' LG X2 each
Bushings should press rite into the hubs but you will have to MIKE your axels and ream the bushings to you Axel shaft diameters. Matt

Any word on the truss head screws?? Have RFP's out for pricing to have some made, but not interested in duplicating efforts if these are going to be available soon.
Thanks!

Re: How much demand for truss head bolts, hub caps?
Yes, we are getting close to having them available soon. The machinist wasn't happy with the heads of his first prototypes. The four original bolts that I sent him have at least two different profiles with different radius heads. We aren't sure if this was because of different manufacturers or just wartime tolerances. He has reengineered the head profile and should be sending me some new samples shortly. Once we are satisfied with the profile he will manufacture a small batch and send them to me. After that it will take a little more time to parkerize them and I will then post a availability notice and photos. Best guess is they should be available in the next couple of weeks.

They hold the bracket that fits below the center of the axle and screw into the cast part where the tongue attaches below the box.retro-roco wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2017 5:17 amDo you recall what the two (2) bolts in the upper left corner (bolts only, no nuts) were for?
Bracket is shown in the upper row just off center to the right

Re: How much demand for truss head bolts, hub caps?
Here are some photos of the new truss head bolts that the machinist just finished and that are being sent to me shortly. Once I get them I will parkerize them to their wartime issue finish. They should be available by the end of next week. These are not mass production, each individual bolt was CNC cut.

Re: How much demand for truss head bolts, hub caps?
Those look great! I wondered when you said he was a machinist it they were going to be cut rather than cold formed. Probably a significant amount of waste cutting these from round stock??
I got a quote today for truss head screws from one of the companies I contacted. Their price ranged from 0.50 to $1.05 per piece, depending on length. With minimum quantities of 2,500 (1" long) and 1,000 (1-1/4 and 1-1/2" long) it came to a little over $3K. But then I'd have enough bolts for 250 hand carts
Probably not that many carts needing screws in the whole world...

Re: How much demand for truss head bolts, hub caps?
That is the problem, we know they are needed but there is just not enough demand to justify mass production. The machinist has cut three complete sets of bolts on the initial run. Obviously, cutting them individually is not the most cost effective option. He says he can cut more to meet specific demands if more requests come in, since he now has the program built for the CNC. We also know that most people are probably only looking for a few to replace those that may be missing or broken.

Re: How much demand for truss head bolts, hub caps?
Giving some serious thought to just switching all the truss head screws and castle nuts to coarse threads (5/16"-18) instead of 5/16"-24. Except the two that thread into the axle support block, the rest just need to match the threads of the nut. I'll have to check to make sure, but I think my axle support block has already been drilled out to take a screw with nut anyway...

The 2 hex head bolts that hold on the axle to the support block were 3/8" NC originally if my memory is correct.

Re: How much demand for truss head bolts, hub caps?
The specification from the cart manual is for 24NF threads. My understanding is that 18NC truss head bolts were already available through McMaster-Carr and that folks were buying them and rethreading to 24 NF them as replacements to match the nuts that were on their carts. Our objective was to produce to exact replacement bolts for the cart without the necessity to rethread and lose strength. The correct nuts with 24NF threads are already available on EBay quite reasonably as a listing by someone else. The only issue is that they appear to be cadmium plated and would need to be media blasted to remove the cad plating.retro-roco wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2017 5:02 amGiving some serious thought to just switching all the truss head screws and castle nuts to coarse threads (5/16"-18) instead of 5/16"-24. Re: How much demand for truss head bolts, hub caps?
I was not planning to re-thread the 18 thread pitch screws, but rather to pair them with coarse thread castle nuts. The number of threads visible once assembled just makes me question if it is worth the time and trouble. BTW, I bought a couple dozen of the repro castle nuts from ebay. They appear to be raw steel, not plated or finished at all.Av8er wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2017 7:55 am

Put me down tentatively for a set of screws and a hub cap please. Are you still in the $2.00-$3.00 per screw range?

Re: How much demand for truss head bolts, hub caps?
I have to admit I am slightly confused by your post regarding using bolts with 18NC threads, particularly if you have already bought the special castle nuts on EBay which should have 24NF threads if they are duplicating the original nuts. I am glad to hear that the nuts on EBay are not plated, as that makes them a suitable replacement for originals from what I can see. As far as costs for the bolts, the machinist production costs were higher than he originally estimated even at his discounted hourly rate (he is semi-retired). It looks like the price will be $4.00 for each bolt (regardless of length, to keep it simple). There are 16 bolts in a set for a cart. The price for a complete set will most likely come in slightly discounted to $60.00 (versus $4.00 each, which would normally be $64.00). He was shipping them to me today and says that I should get them by Tuesday. Hopefully, I will be able to parkerize/phosphate them by the end of next week.
