I got it.

Last question. Which is the correct font style for an October 1952 M38A1?

I am getting them from Rick Larsen at http://www.militarystencils.com/M38A1-J ... -P242.aspx

The biggest difference is in the numbers like the "1" and "6", the USA vs US ARMY he has listed are just examples. Either can be in any font style.

There are 50's pics onG503 of intact National Guard Jeeps taken at Little Rock. They are the real thing. Mine are 99.99% close.

Can you post a link to those pictures?

Your jeep looks great. The hood lettering stencil looks like Larsen's "Military Block B with square periods".

Will try later, and I might just reopen the posts. M-38 and M-38A1 used same font.

Hi All,

Thanks for your input on the postings I made and all your other wisdom/experience you have shared.

I don't want to beat the M38A1 marking thread any further, but was hoping you could tell me what white paint you have used for the markings.

Gloss vs semi-gloss?
Preferred brands?

Thanks,
Dave

Lusterless, I usually go to the local Sherwin Williams store.

Glad I asked. I always thought it was supposed to be semi-gloss white enamel paint for the markings.

The SNL's list a gasoline soluable white stenciling paint that was used for unit markings on bumpers and bumperettes. Lusterless spray cans are neater tho and the army had those too.

dlevy wrote:Great information. Thank you.

So on a 1952 M38A1 the hood stencils should be:
"U.S.A. 209xxxxx". Is this in 1 line or 2 lines?

I am told that in the registration number, the "20" designated 1/4-ton and the "9" designated the M38A1. This is followed by 5 additional numbers.

Is this correct?

Those " Stand Up" caps had a short lifespan in the barracks. The minute a new one was removed and placed on the bunk or shelf, it would be grabbed and flung on the floor to get squashed by a "panther leap" from another GI.

"Normally it would say something like CAUTION, MAX. REFUELING RATE 17GPM" under the slave receptacle location? Maybe under the fuel tank.
