m38a1 serial no.
Just asked about what year this jeep was made. any help would be appreciated. The rear fender Id plate is missing and my question is it the most correct in dating the year of manufacture? The dash data plate says date of del. 11-53 and the serial no doesn't have a MD prefix only the no-- 66412. Is this correct? And could someone help date the engine. The serial no on the water pump boss os MD106723. I could sure use some help.
Thanks
Fred

Re: m38a1 serial no.
Fred,
All these numbers are beginning to confuse me! There is a gentleman on the "M38A1 Restoration Site" that has one with del. date of August 1953 Se. #MD55511. Yours is 11/53 with 66412, which is 10,901 more. That sounds like a lot of units made in three months, since only 101,488 were produced between 1952 and 1957 and the Korean War ended on 27 July 1953. If you look at the numbers on my post, you will see that my inside wheel well tag has a Se. # MD 61169, which as Sean stated indicates that it is a 1952 or 53. I agree with Sean based on the Se. number, but my engine and block numbers indicate that it is newer, 1954 or 55. My new assumption is that the one I am looking at has had an engine or block change.

Thanks for the reply. The m38A1 came out of an estate with the owner deceased but it has all the early features slant fenders, fold down radiator, screw top battery box and the body has not been taken off the frame. The data dash plate looks old and the mounting screws look untouched so this is the reason for the confusion. I wonder if there is a master list of serial no. I would still like to find out. thanks again'

Are the two floor drains at the edge of the floor next to the body sides or are they set at an angle? Does it have the Cuno Oil Filter? And does it have the crankcase ventilation system installred with lines to the master Cyl, air cleaner, transfer, etc.?
Your serial number is too high for a 1952.

Thanks Ben
my dash data plate says date delivered 11-53 and the serial no. does not have an MB prefix only the no. 66412. It has all the early features as I posted before plus a short 46 inch front bumper. To answer your inquiry the floor drains are more in the back part of the floor and are slanted. No cuno oil filter. Many of the vent lines are unhooked but it looks like there is a line running to the transfer case and several lines coming out of the air cleaner. I really. don"t think the jeep has been messed with. anyway your input would be much appreciated. Any way to date an MB motor?
Thanks

I believe the angled drains located inboard indicate 1952 production. Look under the tape on the insulation of the 14 Ga Wiring, it will have the manufacturers name and a year printed, same goes for Tail Lite pigtails and wires on top of grill. Also, if your Speedometer is original, it will have a date rubber stamped on the back. What make is the Speedometer?
If your DOD is eating away at you real bad, drain the differentials and look at the date stamped on the back side of the ring gears. Which Oil Filter does your engine have, Cuno, Fram?

Re: m38a1 serial no.
Many engines in the MD106*** serie were used by Nekaf in The Netherlands in 1955.
For example the M38A1 assembled by Nekaf with frame number MD10610 from 1955 had engine number MD106784 (number near water pump)

Fred - mine is Serial Number 62222 with no MD prefix, delivery date of 10/53. Seems to fit right in with yours.
