Nothing tricky, and nothing to do with data plate or color, the answer is intended to be informational.

41W-200-3825 WB Nut Wrench sounds great to me, thanks Joel....

What's the answer?
I am seeking information on M38A1's configured for MP use from 1953-?.

I am also interested in equipment and uniforms worn and carried by MP's during this timeframe.

The answer?
The M-38 Transfer Case Front and Rear Output Shaft use a Castellated 3/4"- 20NF Nut with Cotter Pin to secure the Front Yoke and Rear Companion Flange to the Output Shafts.
The M-38A1 uses a 3/4"-16 NF "Huglock" Nut (Self Locking) for the same purpose, and of course, the shafts are different part number due to the difference in the threads.
Should the M-38 Transfer Case go to ordnance for repair or rebuild, it is possible for it to receive the later M-38A1 shafts and nuts due to the earlier parts stock being exhausted.

You are on the right track, let's see if anyone can add a little more. The answer I am waiting for is the way the schools taught theArmy Mechanics and is not quite the way it is explained on a TV commercial.

Oh...okay....I guess you were looking for the they control the verticle acceleration of the wheel due to imperfections in the road surface and ensure that the wheel remains in contact with the road surface....or was I supposed to go all the way back to include Newton's Law of Motion as well? Hmmm...let's see.....the shock is used to minimize the transferance of energy to the frame (and everything else in and on the jeep) of the vehicle caused by the verticle acceleration of the wheel due to imperfections in the roadway created by the horizontal motion of the vehicle. The shock also provides resistance to the force of gravity preventing the wheel from slamming back into the roadway.

Next one, what is the purpose of a sparkplug? The answer is simple and most do not answer it the way the army taught it to mechanics.
I used to throw these Army one liners at my High School Automotive Class students. This was before Electronic Ignition and Throttle Body Injection.

Purpose is to take the fuel vapor inside the cylinder and "detonate- combust" it via the spark caused by the spark plug, resulting in a subsequent increase in pressure, pushing the piston downward - transfering the energy of the vaporized gasoline into mechanical energy which in turn allows for propeller shafts to turn via the transmission/transfer cases to the vehicle's wheels :D
