Hot Water Heater

Post by Joe Gopan » Wed Mar 12, 2008 6:14 am

Best heater in the world for 50's era Jeep, too bad they did not use it in the CJ-5. With the enclosure kit, the M-38A1 is nice and warm. The gas heater was a bit more effective, but the hot water kit was simple to maintain.
Only drawback is that servicing the right side of the engine compartment is hampered. Never was a problem in the service as points were usually good for over 10,000 miles.
The M-38A1 with the winter enclosure seemed to be a bit warmer than the M-38 with similar cab. May have been due to the M-38A1 having wood doors.
The M-38A1 Hot water heater unit was designed by Kysor, a leader in air conditioning and heating.

Does anyone know a source for replacement cores for the Kysor heater Ben refers to?

Are the inlet and outlet diagonally upposed from each other on the side of the box, or are they next to each other on the top?
This type heater is common on E-bay, and most surplus truck dealers have good used heaters removed from M-35 trucks. The whole heater body is more common to find than just the core. Army truck dealers do not normally get into stocking small parts for truck heaters.

Heater

They are diagonally opposed. (According to the data plate, it is a model 1590, Stock No. 8710625)

I didn't think it would be too easy to find a loose core. I have a spare kit that I am trying to complete. The only major component that is missing is a serviceable core.

Diagonal core is the early type, the majority are the ones with the pipes next to each other. The late type heaters are available from all major surplus dealers in good used condition, the M-35 is the largest user.
