Help on Leece Neville Regulator

Post by dpcd67 » Thu Jan 25, 2018 3:12 pm

Can anyone give a short tutorial on the Leese Neville 24 volt, 25 amp regulator? It is something I never saw but I want to learn about them. Like, will they work on an M38 and were they ever retro fitted say, during a depot overhaul? Are they solid state or mechanical? What years were they used? Or course, they are not OEM. And any other info that might be interesting about them.

I've seen the "breadbox" 25-amp regulators (Auto-Lite and Delco-Remy). I've seen the 25-amp solid-state replacements for the breadbox types, such as those built by Leland Airborne Products. I haven't seen a Leece-Neville 25-amp regulator.
There is a Leece-Neville 100-amp regulator (carbon pile) model 3392R12P as well as a solid state version (model 5027RC). These are for high-amperage special purpose vehicles, not your everyday 25-amp vehicles.
Does this help?

Yes, some were installed at support units in all of the M-Series earlier 50's-60's trucks having the 25 Amp system. They are a throw away thing that is trouble free. The Leece Neville Solid State 24V 25 Amp Voltage Regulator dates back to at least late 60's. The change change from conventional to Solid State on the M-38/M-38A1 requires installation of a Batt/Gen Indicator as the circuitry for an Ammeter is not in the SS VR. Normally a #27 wire from the Instrument Cluster Spider is used to power the Batt/Gen Gauge. The SS VR is 100% reliable and will normally last forever while needing no adjustment. Other brands of the 25A 24V Solid State Reg are Singer, DC Electronics, etc. I have changed my own M-38A1 to the solid state. it eliminates battery boil over issues that may come from tired conventional Voltage Regulators.
There is a little more to this simple change, will leave it for others who may want to pitch in.

Good; thanks; that helps a lot. I always wanted to use a SS regulator because they are more reliable. I just never heard of a Leece Neville.

But you said there is more to the change from an Auto Lite; what does it take?
thanks.
