transmission / transfer case oil level

Post by old man » Fri Mar 09, 2018 4:18 pm

Well I'm not doing o well on my A2 mutt. After my A2 has been sitting in the shed for the winter months I finally stated working on it. I drained the gas tanks and checked in inside out with a camera and it looks really nice and clean. I did have a fairly good size puddle in the pan under the transmission /Transfer case. So I know I have the front seal to replace but I wanted to add oil before I moved it. From past advice and reading more of the manual I now know not to remove the top plug. and the bottom is the oil level. I spent the better part of the day trying to figure out how to remove the plug. don't seem to be able to reach it from the top, and I have it as high as I can on jacks and not able to reach it from the bottom. Is there another way to add oil with out having a lift? I was planning on working on the front seal from the ground but I'm having 2nd thoughts on trying that.
Thank You for any help in advance

I just slide under mine and get it from the bottom, it is supposed to use the same wrench as the oil pan drain and the differential drains and plugs but it kind of looks like yours has been changed to something different. It should not be too much of a problem to get to, I have done it out in the field several times. If you are going to replace the seal then don't add oil until after the job since you are going to lose all of the oil when you pull the yoke out. Just moving it from point A to point B will not hurt it, especially if it has been leaking over the winter, that means it does have oil in it. Just don't go driving it around the neighborhood. Or if point B is a few miles away you might want to check it but if it is only low don't add fluid just to go a couple miles.

As long as it's leaking there's still oil in it! Worry when it stops leaking! :D :D

Seriously though. I hate trying to get gear oil into a trans from the side fill holes. I usually pull the fill plug out then pull the shifter out and fill from the top until it comes out the fill hole.
