Thanks. Mark suggested the same thing. If at some point you can be more specific (date, issue number, etc), I would appreciate it.

EDIT: NEVER MIND. Mark reffed AM #83 and #84 above. Thanks.

I decided to call mine "ROSIE" - my partner at the time who lent me the money to purchase it - and she was much into Military Vehicles too.
We went back to Normandy on one of Pete Gray's tours, probably in the early '80's in my K2 Ambulance, and as she is a State Registered Nurse, took the opportunity of wearing a period outfit.
I had decided to have it signwritten on the windscreen - which I could detach and let the signwriter have it in his small workshop.
A bit difficult leaving the whole Jeep!
Unfortunately we are not together any more, but still keep in touch. On D-Day her father was in one of the ships firing salvoes of rockets at the Beach - My Father was on the beach at Arromanches as part of the Royal Naval Beach Party.
Call me sentimental or what!!

I was reading my new book by John Farley - The Standardised War - Time Jeep 2 and came across a photo on page 120 of a Jeep USA 20496529 taken outside the Ordmance Depot 911 , Metz, France.
In small letters stencilled across the centre of the windscreen is the legend "DOTTIE".
I also see that Claude Pons named his GPW withwhat seems to be "BEE BOONE" - sign written on the drivers side windscreen, in the photo taken with his Tandem Tow mounted.

So that settles it for me! , my Jeep is non-standard anyway, and the name ROSIE does have a special meaning, and I shall wear it with pride, like my Poppy.

Is this a result of your own observation (comparing the first letter of the name or nickname to the unit designation), Ben, or did you read this somewhere? If the latter, would you please cite a reference.
This won't be "written" in an AR or FM. It's a Unit SOP, so IF its written, it'll be in unit SOP's. One of my old units used historical battles, so Bravo Battery had "Belleau Wood" for instance.

I saw an original called " Bortion" in France, unrestored. Can someone tell what that meant ?

The original name of my 42 GPW was "Dry Run," hand-painted above the rear wheel wells. I have retained the name, again hand-painted. Presumably it was a stateside Jeep.

Good Afternoon Gents,

I just wanted to comment and say what a great thread this is! Has anyone ever come across any of these names in any original photos?

Evelyn (Eve)
Catherine
Beatrice
Julia
Diesel
(Or something Airborne related?)

I am also interested in any random interesting names that have been spotted over the years. What would be a good resource to start sifting through pictures of Jeep names? I saw someone mention "John Farleys" book but I haveny picked that up yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Has anyone come across a photo of 20656658 or something near that number? (+/- 10-20)

I named mine "Debbie Sue", after my wife, because she did not give me any grief when I bought it!
