Look at the picture at the TOP of that article. I can't tell whether it's an MB or a GPW, but I did notice it has a flat top grille. Why would there be a flat top on a jeep issued in '43, unless it's a much earlier jeep? When Roy Carlson of HQ Company arrived to England during the fall of 1943, he became a Jeep driver and was quickly assigned a Willy’s MB with hood number W-20328511. This jeep had been produced by Willy’s back in May 1943 and received the bumper markings 1A 99-I * HQ-18. Roy gave his Jeep the name “Hootin Annie” which was painted on above the back wheels.

Hey Marty
Save yourself the trouble of mounting two carriers back to back. Two jerry cans will sit quite easily side by side on a conventional mounted can holder.You.d just need a strap to hold them in place.Take a look at the original pic on page 283 in standardised ww2 jeep volume2 and youll see the set up in practice.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
NOW you tell me!!!
Seriously, that's a good idea! I don't have a picture, or that book, but I can imaging what you are talking about. KISS sometimes is the best solution!
I already have built the carrier, I have taken some pics of it, (to be posted soon) it seems very sturdy, I can stand on it and the tail panel doesn't flex. It looks just like the one in the Tunisia picture. I need to remove it from the jeep and paint it. One thing I need to check is the clearances to my M100 trailer, if I were to tow with the dual can carrier in place, it may come close during certain maneuvers. It's easily removeable, maybe it would take 10 minutes to swap the original carrier back. No new holes were drilled in the jeep or the two original can brackets. The scrap steel I made it with cost 80 cents a pound at the local metal supply. it took about two hours to bend the metal for the bracket base, drill the holes and weld it together, mount it to the tail panel and fab the supporting tubes that go down to the frame.
Expanding on Nicks' Idea, maybe I can mount three or four cans on the back?
Chuck, I looked into mounting the can/s on the front, the cans would have to mount with their length in line with the jeep, directly over the frame rail to be clear of the tandem hitch and for tire clearance. They would interfere with the headlights mounted like this. Maybe a couple of those 10 liter French "Vin" cans for water would work well up front! I might be able to squeeze a 5 gallon can between the frame rails, mounted on it's side, between the hitch and the grille. I would need to use a longer strap to keep the hitch up in place. I'm still going to play with it.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
Here's some of the pics!
Original bracket:
Scrap steel plate used to make the mount:
Top view:
Bottom view:
Back view:
Cans mounted:
The plate is about 9" wide, same as the panel reinforcement, the two support braces are EMT tubing, with the ends flattened to the proper angel after eyeballing it and then drilled after test fitting and marking the holes. All holes are 13/32nds (10mm), all bolts are 3/8" SAE grade 8 fine. I marked and drilled them after bending the plate, using a can bracket as the template. The bottom braces bolt to the upper right bumperette hole on the frame. I was able to use the sheet metal brake at work to bend the plate, 90* at the panel, 45* under the bottom for added strength. They could have been simple plates welded together, though. Most of the strength and stiffness comes from the two carriers being bolted together. The brace from the upper can bracket holes to the panel side is 2" strap steel, with triangular braces welded to the panel. A spacer takes up the same thickness at the bottom bracket hole.
I still need to take it apart, sand and prime, then paint it. I'll check the fitment with the trailer hooked up and update the post later on.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
Looks well thought-out! Nice job.
I'm curious to hear how it will work with your M-100.

Here is one for you. I know you already made the one but is someone else wants to make a different one. I think there is another photo like this as well.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
There is a photo of an MB in Italy circa 1943 with a dual can holder. One is mounted like normal (back to rear panel), the second bracket is bolted to the first (front to front) with a pipe or tube support from the bottom running to the rear crossmember/bumperette.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
Some more pics, painted and final assemby:
Here's how it fits with the M100:
The right side can carrier's original strap broke into pieces when I tried to tighten it up to hold the can so I had to substitute the strap, for now.
There is enough clearance for street driving between the trailer and the bottom of the can carriers, but it might get hit if the jeep were used off-road. The can carrier could be raised up for more clearance pretty easily. If I decide to go off-roading with the trailer, I'll reinstall the single can carrier.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
I own the restored "Hootin Annie", and it has been restored based upon a collection of photographs provided to me by the original driver. Yes, "Hootin Annie" had 2 x jerry can holders bolted back-to back, which again was bolted to the original mounting holes. Based upon the photos I have, this modification was done just prior to the Normandy landing. I used a set of 1 inch spacers between the tub and the can holders. I also have photos of other jeeps in the 99th motor pool using the same mounting system.lightningdivision wrote:Hootin Annie was a jeep with the dual jerrycans at the back.

Re: Dual Gas can carrier idea
Erik, Can you post some pics of your setup? Might be simpler.
My friend wants me to make a dual can mount for his '44 MB. I might build it to mount the cans a bit higher, for more trailer clearance.

The first series are taken from my 99th photo database. The first four shows the original "Hootin Annie" while the last shows another 99th jeep with different configuration.
